Over what hill?

“Age is not a particularly interesting subject. Anyone can get old. All you have to do is live long enough.”
~Groucho Marx

Today is a very special day, and not just because it is the official start date for Once Upon a Time II. No, ladies and gentlemen, today is much more than that.

Today is the day that my 8 months of spousal harassment begin! Yes indeed, for the next 8 months to the day I, a mere 39 year old young man, will be able to give my wife grief* for forging ahead into her 40’s! I am married to an older woman…the cradle robber.

*some would say I’ve given her grief for 18+ years! 🙂

I ask you all to observe a moment of silence at 4:22 p.m. Eastern Standard Time as my wife turns the big 4-0.

Joking aside, my wife grows more lovely and intriguing each year and I find it comforting to be entering this next decade of life with her. And so by way of a blog birthday present, here are a few nods to things she likes (things we both like actually) as a reminder of what she means to me:

LeAnn Rimes

A Fine Frenzy

Regina Spektor

Scouting for Girls (although the age and situation don’t fit I think the sentiment surely does and we both get a big kick out of this song/video)

The Moldy Peaches

Barry Louis Polisar (not really much of a video, but another Juno song we love):

And to close my birthday wishes to my dearest wife, a couple of our favorite scenes from our favorite films. These clips are a bit long and it is okay if you don’t watch them. We have a tradition in our home in which we pick several movies and watch the last 30-40 minutes or so. We do this often, have these Endings days. The Jane Austen films are often a part of Endings movie nights/days. These are briefer clips but still a tad long:

Pride and Prejudice (the aspect ratio is off on this, I apologize). When the music first starts and she sees him crossing the field and you hear that audible intake of breath…that gets me every time. I know that feeling.

Emma (one of our favorite long love scene endings in a romantic movie.)

Sense and Sensibility (one of the funniest and most joyful romantic movie endings ever.)

“Will you love me in December as you do in May,
Will you love me in the good old fashioned way?
When my hair has all turned gray,
Will you kiss me then and say,
That you love me in December as you do in May?”

~James Walker

(Yes I will!)

Happy Birthday dearest Mary. As we approach the end of our 19th year of marriage and the end of our thirties I must say that these have been the most fulfilling years of my life and I look forward to many more birthdays together. I love you deeply, passionately, and profoundly.

“Age cannot wither her, nor custom stale her infinite variety. Other women cloy the appetites they feed, but she makes hungry where most she satisfies.”

~William Shakespeare

Today is also my younger (and only) brother Jason’s birthday. He is not turning 40. Thus he too is younger than my wife is now. 😉 Jason is a fantastic brother and I have enjoyed the privilege of having him in my life these many years. I hope you have a wonderful birthday Jason, I love you bro!

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

(and to give credit where credit is to, I stole the opening image from JP, who in turn found it elsewhere….)

  9. Wishing you A Wonderful Birthday Mary! 🙂 What a beautiful birthday present…my eyes were misty before I listened to any music or watched a movie clip. Oh…Pride and Prejudice and such touching words at the end.

I even had my hubby come over and check this out(he noticed Leann Rimes, A Fine Frenzy-we saw them last fall when they opened for Brandi Carlile-great show-and Glen Cook on the side) and said he considered himself romantic but that this made him look pretty bad. 😉 We’re both home today enjoying this wonderful welcome to spring snow storm(Wisconsin)…at least 8 inches so far!!!

I just turned 40 last month…the 30’s were really good so I’m hoping that 40 is even better! 🙂

Hope you have a fabulous day!!!
