Do you want to play a game?!?!

For so many of us the month of October is all simply a prelude to the Halloween season and if you are like me then you want to stretch out the Halloween vibe throughout the entire month rather than leaving it all for one day. That desire to make Halloween last the whole month was part of the impetus behind the first R.I.P. Challenge.

The work of Lisa Snellings-Clark has featured prominently in my blogging life and I have said many a time, and much more eloquently, just how much her work means to me and how much of an inspiration she is to my own creativity. Imagine my surprise when she offered to contribute to and partner with us for this year’s R.eaders I.mbibing P.eril II Challenge. In addition to Lisa and Ravyn making the amazing R.I.P. II bookmarks (revealed in yesterday’s post) and donating a little black poppet to the cause, she also forewarned me that she would be having a deliciously gothic sale during the month of October, allowing those of us reveling in the spirit of the season to add some of her marvelous creations to our collections.

Per usual I am a bit behind and the sale is already in full swing, but it is not too late to snag some interesting, unique, and fun October inspired creations from the mind of Lisa Snellings-Clark.

So join with me, and let’s Play in the Dark.

Lisa has all manner of Poppet and non-Poppet creations. These Halloween Skeleton Poppets are among my favorites, their glow-in-the-dark look when the lights are out remind me so much of the skeletons in Tim Burton’s film, The Corpse Bride, that I smile everytime I look at the above image.

One of the really fun ideas Lisa had awhile back was to make masks for the Poppets. As you can see above she got very creative with masks in the spirit of the season. I really love the Cthulu mask above, especially as I have become such a fan of the work of H.P. Lovecraft during this challenge.

Side Note: my experience with Lovecraft’s work on Short Story Sundays reaffirms why I love hosting and participating in challenges. The joy I have gotten from discovering a new-for-me author is hard to describe, but those of you who have discovered new favorite authors and books during these reading challenges surely understand what I mean.

Lisa has gotten extra creative with adding an eerie, glowing dimension to her already wonderful creations. This one, Little Pink’s Flight, looks especially otherworldly as the lights go down.

If you haven’t seen any of the foppet creations, you’ve missed some wonderful works. Here is a Poppet and Foppet set all decked out for the festivities. Isn’t that Foppet fun?

And what would a Slaughterhouse Studios sale be without these guys?:

“They’re creepy and they’re kooky,
Mysterious and spooky,
They’re all together ooky,
The [Poppet] Family”

In appropriate holiday colors, of course!

This is just the tip of the iceberg of the many darling yet creepy creations Lisa Snellings-Clark has up for adoption. And because I want you to see them all and, at the very least, eye them covetously, for everyone who visits the Play in the Dark sale site and returns here before midnight Wednesday night sharing just which one or ones they like most and why (or which one or ones just creep you out) you will be entered into a drawing for a fabulous R.I.P. II bookmark of your very own!

  1. I’m partial to the orange ones. Orange is my favorite colour this time of year. I once painted my living room “Pumpkin Butter” because it was fallish. I loved it.

She sure has a lot of cute stuff!

  2. I think my favourite is the Halloween Bat Poppet and Foppet. I love how out-of-this-world and eerie they look, how they are creepy and yet, at the same time, somewhat tender. The Foppet’s eyes make him look a little lost.

  3. they are very cute.. but I’ve blown my “wad” for the next 2 months!

like the Wizard Box and the Foppet..and adord plain ol’ little pink

  4. It is very, very hard to choose.

I think I am torn between Ravyn’s wingèd horse-with-Poppet-highwayman (I don’t know if he’s meant to look like a highwayman, or if that’s just me) and Jacko.

Highwaymen and I go way back. When I was a small child, I was given a book of poems which included this one. And although I’m not sure I’d claim it was high art (maybe more like high camp – note the thigh-high boots!) it has stayed with me ever since. And I remember all the highwaymen in children’s books I read later; particularly Lord Tom from Leon Garfield’s atmospheric and grittySmith.

On the other hand, I also have a strong fondness for jack o’ lanterns. Hallowe’en is one of the few truly authentic folk traditions still going in Scotland, and we always used to have turnip lanterns. Same idea as the pumpkins, but a lot harder to carve; but it’s worth it, because the green and purple, lumpy outside of the turnip gives the lantern a very creepy and goblin-like air.

These days most people, including me, carve pumpkins instead because it’s so much easier. However, Britain has had such a bad summer that there is a pumpkin shortage, and our pumpkins may be green rather than orange! So perhaps the humble turnip will make a comeback…

I already have a little pumpkin man from Lisa, and he’ll be proudly on display once Hallowe’en gets a little closer.

  5. I really like the Ghostly Poppet in Flight. It just looks so deliciously creepy, especially when glowing in the dark!

  6. I love the Neil Gaiman Rat who is sitting on his little book. Plus – his beautiful blue glowing eyes would totally creep me out at night – brrrrrr!!! Bwhaa ha ha! BOO!!! Eeeeeeek!

    LOL

  7. I’m in love with the skeleton poppets and picked one up as soon as it was listed 🙂 I also loved the ghostly poppets that were up but didn’t win one 🙁 They were so cool! The little white/gossamer ones…And the V for Vendetta poppet is just so frickin cool!!!

  8. I think all of Lisa Snellings creations are great. They do remind of me ‘nightmare before christmas’. I like her ‘Clark Halloween Skeleton Set’ best. Not only does he glow in the dark, but he’s got removable pieces too. Very cute, I think he looks almost like a little trikc-or-treater.

  9. Nothing like asking the impossible…how can one pick a favorite?!! But that said, I fell totally in love with the Bat Poppet and Foppet. Nothing creepy though, just tremendously sweet and enchanting, if you ask me. I also absolutely love the Alien Poppet. And I guess you’d have to say I love the black one, too…as I just ordered it while I was over there. To go with the orange one I ordered a few days back…and the purple one I ordered a week or so before that. I mean, come on…everything she does is simply magical!

  10. (Carl, Please leave me out of the draw – I’m trying to live a minimalist life) … I seriously love the Halloween Bat Poppet and Foppet but unfortunately I’m on a spending freeze and can’t afford to bid on it. 🙁 I like the pink poppet too – that is more affordable and it’s one I’m eyeing … but seeing I’m trying to be minimalist, I think I really should just admire them online.

  11. Bright Eyes is my favorite, with the black face and glow in the dark eyes over the orange robe. Although, I think the little girl’s mask for the red poppet is a great idea; how clever, dressing up one’s poppets! (When my son was very little, McDonald’s had Happy Meals with plastic chicken McNuggets and costumes you could put over them. I’m saving them because it’s a happy memory, plus they’re so cute! Who wouldn’t enjoy a poppet, or nugget, prepared for the season? No one!)

  12. I love the ghost poppet in flight. Great – this site just added like 5 new things to the really want but can’t afford list

  13. It’s really hard to pick! I think the Sad Little Brain O’Lantern is kind of scary, but cute at the same time. My favorite would be the little skeleton trick or treater (labeled Halloween Skeleton Set).

  14. Oh, definitely Sad Little Brain O’Lantern is my favorite. After having a hubby who had a crainiotomy in 2001 and now goes by the moniker HalfBrainBoy, who WOULDN’T love a Sad Little Brain in any form? CUTE!

  15. Must…..have……Poppet! Any poppet! I guess I will just have to win one! I like little pink poppet in flight and the poppet and foppet.

  16. I love her Neil Gaiman rat as I enjoy his books and anything that comes with a book is a plus in my book.

  17. Maybe its because I’m English, but the Guy Poppet is quite a cheeky chap. He looks so ripe for mischief. All of them are very creepy, especially when they gather in groups. They remind me of mini executioners or garden gnomes gone bad. Great creations.

  18. One could spend a fortune on Poppets, couldn’t one? I loved the scarey mask, I think because it reminds me of “The Scream”. It’s been that kind of a week. I also love Little Pink. Actually, I could probably happily walk away with about five or six of them. Which, unfortunately, I won’t

  19. I really like the Bat Poppet and Foppet! And the ‘Atomic Garden Soup’ is very cool. But the one I fell in love with in my price range was the Trick or Treat Rat because I was born on Halloween in the Year of the Rat! He just arrived yesterday and is so fun! And he joins the black and purple poppets I got earlier. 🙂
