Random reminiscences

As it usually does, one book begets another. Shouldn’t there be book birth control or something? Having that taste of the first Fritz Leiber Lankhmar novel in Chaykin/Mignola’s graphic novel adaptation of Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser made me want to read the rest of that story. So much so that I stopped by Barnes and Noble at lunch today thinking, “There’s no way they’ll have this anyway”. Lo and behold, they had the Dark Horse edition after all. After spending a few minutes together I realized we were a perfect match, so I signed the adoption papers and brought it home. I sure hope it is house trained…

Some Once Upon a Time Challenge updates:

The book reviews are mounting up over at the OUaT Review site. Make sure to post links to your reviews over there as you complete them.

We now have 54 people signed up for the challenge. That is 3 more than officially signed up for the R.I.P. Challenge. I know there are probably those out there that I may not have posted yet, so if you are doing the challenge and aren’t represented on the list (scroll down to end of post) and/or on the review site link list, let me know! And it is far from too late to join in, so if you have been on the edge of deciding whether or not to join us-jump! Take the plunge! There are more than two months left to complete the challenge.

In other news, we have our first Once Upon a Time Challenge finisher: Kailana! For this amazing feat Kailana can brag that she has kicked our butts all over the place! Congrats, Kailana! Even more motivation to get through my own challenge! 😉

Some of you may remember reading about my trip to see Neil Gaiman in Chicago back in 2005 and the wonderful show that we saw while there, Hephaestus. The show was amazing and I would love to see it again. It would be a perfect fit during this Once Upon a Time Challenge period for the mythology category! Needless to say, I was excited to see a comment left in the ‘About Me’ section of the blog today:

Hi there, very strange coincidence that I thought I’d share with you. I created, co-wrote, co-directed and played the title character in the show Hephaestus: A Greek Mythology Circus Tale, AND I am currently adapting a book by Neil Gaiman into my next play/circus. And randomly I stumbled across that blog about seeing our show and the Gaiman book signing. It made me feel like it was a sign! Anyways, I’m glad you enjoyed our little show, (which we are trying to bring back) and glad there are other Gaimaniacs like myself out there.

Sincerely,
Tony Hernandez

Isn’t that fantastic? I cannot wait to see what book he is adapting and I will definitely want to see this show. Check out Tony Hernandez’ site for trailers and pictures from the show Hephaestus.

Next up:

Tomorrow (or later tonight) will be my review of the Rodriguez/Tarantino flick, Grindhouse, which we are viewing tonight. I am almost embarrassed by how much I’m looking forward to this. I have been a fan of both director’s for awhile now. Rodriguez vaulted way up my list with his treatment of Sin City; Tarantino with Kill Bill Vol 1 and 2 and because he brought Wong Kar-Wai’s wonderful film, Chungking Express, to U.S. audiences.

Plus its been a long time since I’ve seen Kurt Russell is a fun, B-movie role. I’m so psyched!

Friday will bring a tour of Endicott Studio, with the promised first giveaways of the Once Upon a Time Challenge! Don’t miss it!

Happy Hump Day, everyone!

  1. I read yesterday that there were plans to split Grindhouse up into two separate shows, adding material that was originally cut to round out each portion of the film.

  2. I saw Grindhouse Saturday. I was thinking of reviewing it on my site, but who knows when I’ll get it up. Suffice to say, I loved it. Planet Terror was my favorite. My hubby liked Death Proof better. I did really enjoy that car chase at the end. Zoe Bell kicks major butt!!

  3. Glad to hear you and your hubby liked it, Heather.

I heard that too Suzanne, that is the way they are allegedly going to release it on DVD. Just another way to take more of our money!

  4. Yes indeed! I am definitely an irresponsible book parent who should be required to wear some sort of book condom to stop me from all the unplanned births that seem to happen everytime I pick up a book. I’ve got underappreciated books all over the place!

  5. I’ve found a solution to that problem. Move across the country or across the ocean about once every other year. There ya go…. instant book birth control, aka donate everything you’ve bought to the library. 😛

  6. Yay, bragging rights! I like bragging rights. lol No worries, I’ll be good… and just read more fantasy :p

  7. That wouldn’t help me CdnReader, I’d just end up schlepping all my books with me…

  8. Yeah, I too would pay the fortune to have all of my books sent overseas :p

Can’t wait to hear what you think about Grindhouse. I haven’t seen it yet, but I’m a HUGE Tarantino fan.

  9. Book birth control! Egads, man don’t dare say such things. I’ve already been snipped once but I draw the line when it comes coming between me and books.

Cool comments on the play from the co-creator. That’s really neat and awesome to hearing he’s working in Neil’s realm.

  10. I was thinking more like book condoms, Jeff…that way it would be all about choice. 😉

I know, I cannot wait to see what book he is adapting and what he will come up with!
