Under the Weather, in more ways than one

(Table for Four?)

Went to bed last night with the snow falling down and awoke this morning to see the neighborhood blanketed with the white stuff. Hard to believe that they are predicting weather near 60 just one week from today. Today I have a kinship with my yard, we’re both under the weather. Actually this started Sunday evening and is continuing today. Today I’ll stay home and heavily medicate myself, hoping for a quick recovery.

Since I didn’t get around to asking yesterday, how was everyone’s weekend? Despite ending with a severe cold, ours was actually pretty great. Friday night we went to see Mary’s brother and his family in their new house. Good food (lasagna…so good!!!), fun conversation. Saturday night we went and visited James and Jules and our friends Tom and Karen and their children were there as well. Very fun evening with delicious food (smothered burritos!) and great conversation. Sunday we ate out with my sister Abby and her husband Mike and James and Jules and their kids. All in all it was a very good food-filled weekend.

Also went and saw Pan’s Labyrinth again, this time taking my wife. She seemed to really enjoy it and I loved it even more the second time. It is such an emotional film.

On Friday Mary called me at work to tell me that she had a surprise for me. When we got home that night she gave me the package that had been sent from overseas with my very own copy of The Lost Thing by Shaun Tan. Shaun Tan is one of my favorite children’s book authors. His picture books are stunning both in story and art. His oil paintings and collage-style artwork are outstanding. This is a very fun book. I recommend it and The Red Tree. Good stuff. Thank you so much sweetie!!!

I got quite a bit of reading done this week. Finished Time Pieces, review forthcoming. Read several more stories in Science Fiction: Best of 2006. Read The Lost Thing, of course. Today the mail should be bringing me the Jack Vance Treasury

featuring an amazing cover by artist Tom Kidd and Adventures in Unhistory

which I have heard/read many wonderful things about. Hopefully the weather won’t delay today’s delivery.

If you’re bored today and feel like killing zombies I suggest heading over to Crazy Monkey games and giving Boxhead a try. Very easy to learn but not necessarily easy to conquer. Very fun. I found this link thanks to the good folks over at SF Signal, a site I recommend visiting daily.

Past Friday Favorite James Jean is the subject of a brief interview with TOR art director Irene Gallo on her blog. His work is so amazing. If you’re a fan go check out the interview.

I hope everyone survived Monday and that you all have a wonderful Tuesday!

  1. Great snow picture Carl! This is certainly more than the “dusting-to-an-inch” they promised us.

    I hope you’re feeling better!

  2. sorry to hear you’re under the weather; hope you’re feeling better soon! Love the artwork on Fables šŸ™‚

  3. Sorry to hear you’ve got the crud. I had it for almost 3 weeks last month and am hoping that’s it for the year!

Lovely picture of your snow. We got a “dusting” last night, too. About 4-5 inches. What a winter! It just keeps on coming.

  4. Feel better! I almost wish I could claim illness so I could crawl into bed and read for the rest of the day.

  5. Thanks all, I hope to have licked this by tomorrow so that I can get back into the groove of things.

Yay! My books arrived!!! Looking forward to getting into them a bit.

  6. What a beautiful book “The Lost Thing” looks to be…

…and I MUST READ “Adventures In Unhistory.” Is it good? Oh, please let it be good! It looks like just my kind of thing.

  7. Oh, I hope you feel better soon! We’re getting clobbered with the snow right now – we’ll
    be digging out tomorrow.

  8. Hope you get well soon Carl. I’ve hear alot about Adventures in Unhistory too. I’ve been wanting to pick it up. Looks great. I love your snow pic…wish we got weather like that every now and then in New Orleans.

  9. I’m feeling a bit ridden hard and put up wet myself today, though thankfully I don’t have to deal with snow–yet, anyway. Feel better soon.

  10. Take care of yourself; there is something cruddy going through work – mine moved into pneumonia, so I’ll be here reading for the rest of the week. I love the cover of “Adventures in Unhistory”. It looks dark and old and, hopefully, great fun to read.

  11. Sorry to hear you’re feeling yucky. If you’re going to be sick, today was a good day for it.

I groaned when school was canceled today. When I told the kids they groaned, too. That’s pretty bad when you announce a snow day and the kids boo. That’s how sick of winter we all are. They’re out tomorrow too. Ugh. They are out of school next Monday and Tuesday too. We’re dying to go to the Great Wolf Lodge to have some summer-like fun.

  12. Ooh, that photo makes me wish for snow! Not much chance of it down here.

I really want to see Pan’s Labyrinth, after reading about it earlier on your blog – I just have to find someone else willing to go.

  13. Sounds like the temps will be quite spring-like next week Jules, so winter will only be a bit longer.

Lesley, you need to see this, even if you have to go alone!

  14. hope you’re feeling better today…!

the snow looks beautiful. i can’t imagine what it must be like to have that much that people get sick of it! we seldom get snow here in oxford. last week we had snow for about two days and that was it. for the whole year!

that shaun tan book looks gorgeous!! yet another damn book i’m gonna have to check out because of you!! šŸ™‚

  15. I sentence myself to be flogged with wet noodles for punishment, jean pierre.

  16. Two weeks and March will be here!!!!

I am glad you guys were able to come over Saturday. I can’t wait to have a bigger home for the kids to play in. I think they were crowded. Everyone had a good time though. . . I hope. We need to do it more often. Spring is coming. I am looking forward to James’ grilling!! We’ll have you over to enjoy it, too.

  17. That Avram Davidson book of essays looks intriguing. I added it to my wish list.

Hope you start to feel better soon.

  18. That snow looks so pretty. We were supposed to get some today but I haven’t seen even a flake! Hope you are feeling better soon.

  19. I’m really hating snow right now.. not that it wasn’t fun being snowed-in 2 days in a row. But I hate shoveling so much!

  20. I saw ‘James grilling’ and instantly started smelling grilled pork chops and steak….mmmmmm. Can’t wait.

I’m still not feeling the best, mostly just a severely sore throat today. Am going to rest up and medicate and will probably be back at it tomorrow. Thanks again everyone for all the well-wishes, it warms the heart.

I’m pretty happy, I’ve had the winter that I wanted and usually never get, plenty of snow and a few ‘snow days’…which are much more fun when you’re kids are grown up, I totally understand how it isn’t necessarily a fun thing for adults with little kids.

Shoveling wasn’t bad this morning because the snow was light, at least on the walk. It was pretty packed on the driveway and that was a bit harder…which is why I quit and took my sick butt right back in the house this morning.

  21. Sorry to hear you’re sick–too. It seems like everyone has something nasty right now. For once I am happy to say I am glad to be left out. It isn’t fair you’re going to have weather in the 60s soon. It has been frigidly cold here for what feels like forever and I for one am tired of it. I think we might be somwhere close to 40 over the weekend. I guess in comparison to the weather now that will feel balmy. Feel better soon!

  22. Hope you’re on the mend, dear Carl. The Lost Thing looks marvelous. What a terrific cover! Happy Valentine’s Day xo, BL

  23. Thank goodness we just have the cold temps, not the feet of snow most are getting! Hope you’re feeling better – sending some virtual chicken soup your way!

  24. I am sad that you and Tori still aren’t feeling well…I am a hand washing fiend these days.

I did enjoy the weekend with the family and friends and watching Pan’s Labyrinth. Very well done, moving, intense, etc.

I was so bummed when they didn’t close the university because of the bad weather. I have several co-workers out sick, so the days have flown by with all the busy,
    busy work.

Happy V-Day, Sweetie! and to all of you reading this.

  25. Speaking of Valentine’ Day. One of my student assistants is from France. She was so pleased to find out that even the single folks get Valentine wishes and sometimes gifts (chocolate from her host family) in America.

  26. I hope you’re feeling better!!

As usual, I love the art that you post! Even though my comments are few, I visit your site everyday just to see what you have up. If I was a millionaire, I would buy everything that you post!

And Pan’s Labyrinth is amazing! My husband and I can’t get over that film. It really deserved a lot more Oscar nominations. We should go see it again….

  27. Glad you both liked it, it is a phenomenal film.

Thanks for the kind thoughts. If I was a millionaire I would be buying all this stuff too! Actually I’d be trying to buy several originals off of these artists!

I am doing much better today and hopefully all traces of this yuck will be gone by tomorrow.

  28. Ha hah. Under the weather in more ways than one. šŸ™‚

I’ve been icky-sick too, but finally am feeling almost my self. Now my husband has it. Sigh.

I hope you feel better soon!

And how awesome of Mary to have found such a great gift for you. I’ve never heard of Shaun Tan, but I love what you’ve posted here. It reminds me of Bosch and Dali, in a kids’ version.
