I know that you all have been anxiously awaiting the results of Friday’s inaugural Stainless Steel Droppings Pointless Contest!!! (all 6 or 7 of you who entered, anyway!)
And so, without further ado….drumroll please….the winners are:
Jeff S. and Pat A.!!!!
There were some very close guesses on the first question but Jeff came the closest with a guess of 14. The actual number of books in the picture that I had already read is 13. They are:

The second question regarding how many of the pictured books I had started to read but had not yet finished was guessed perfectly by Pat: 8!

Each prize will be personalized to the individual winner. In the next few days I will post pictures of the winning prizes in the hopes of encouraging future participation. Thanks to everyone who did join in and to everyone who commented on that post…it was a nice turnout and I appreciate all the kind comments!!!

In addition to the wonderful surprise of delicious BBQ and Boulevard Wheat Beer that James surprised me with at the Fantasy Draft on Sunday, Jeff also came bearing gifts:

The Essential Dracula not only contains Bram Stoker’s original 1897 text with the “missing” first chapter, but it is fully annotated with thousands of fascinating facts and legends about Dracula, Transylvania, and vampires. It also includes: a major essay by Leonard Wolf, which provides background on Stoker’s classic, examines the cultural history of the Dracula myth, and traces the literary history of the vampire novel from John Polidori’s The Vampire (1819) to Anne Rice’s The Vampire Lestat; commentary by leading contemporary writers including Harlan Ellison, Robert Bloch, and many more; a selected filmography and dozens of illustrations.
Needless to say it was a great gift, my loving Stoker’s Dracula and all. Thanks Jeff! I look forward to sinking my teeth into it. You know, I’m almost sorry about that last remark.

Here are some good literary treasures for your Tuesday:
The incomparable Sheila O’Malley is waxing eloquent about one of my favorite book series, Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montogmery. Click each individual title for each book that she has discussed so far:
Anne of Green Gables, Anne of Avonlea, Anne of the Island, Anne of Windy Poplars.
Every young girl should read these books and every young man looking to eventually romance one of these young girls should as well. For that matter every adult should read them too! Looking forward to reading the rest of her posts.
Stormfilled has posted pictures of the almost final product of the book binding that she is doing. It turned out fantastic. Scroll down for earlier pictures of the process.
Janet (Shifty) has some wonderful pictures posted that she took over the weekend.
Stefanie had the ultimate of sucky Monday’s when she went out to ride and found her bicycle was stolen.
There’s a Hobbit discussion brewing at Our Coffee Rings (that pun was totally unconsciously typed).
and to close
Heather has a funny mommy/mommy-to-be story.
Happy Tuesday, everyone!
But I wasn’t home for the contest! And I would have guessed 13 and 8…!
Or not. Maybe I’m cheating… 😉
I don’t know Anne…I think your psychic powers may have helped you get it right…then again they should have informed you about the contest. 😉
I just love pictures of books. Almost as much as I love actual books. Those look like lovelies and I actually added a couple to my want list. And that edition of Dracula looks wicked awesome. I may have to pick it up!
I do the same thing when I see book pics on other’s sites. It is a pretty cool edition of Dracula…the ‘D’ on the cover looks so three dimensional that I just love the way that it looks.
Drat! I missed a contest. My own darn fault I guess. Nice book photos though, and that edition of dracula is soo pretty 🙂
I didn’t win? Now my day is ruined. Actually it’s okay, because I’m pretty sure I’ll still be getting some special and personalized from you in the near future, even if it’s not a fabulous book.
Ah I forgot to email you! Was all caught up in lots of mundane rubbish.
Congrats Jeff and Pat!
Anne of Green Gables is a favourite of mine too – I really enjoyed the books as a child. Haven’t revisited for a while, really should. *pops it on the list*
dang, that’s what I get for taking Friday off! I missed the chance to make a guess! Thanks for including me on the list of literary treasures! Was it the Zeppelin bio and Studs Terkel book or the Emily Dickinson poem?
okay when’s the next contest?! 🙂 I want that Essential Dracula book. I love the cover.
Funny that you ask iliana because I’m thinking its coming up quick and it will take almost no effort to win!!!
Its for being shifty, Janet…simply for being shifty.
I kept looking for your email Quixotic…next time! You should revisit the Anne series, they are so wonderful. Read just one of Sheila’s entries and you’ll be convinced.
Sorry Suzanne! I feel bad because I harrassed you for the boxes and then we’ve been over-run with school starting and volleyball practice and tournaments and Nic coming over to watch movies and we haven’t done anything but some initial planning. We will get to them soon though. I’m very excited about the project.
You’re not to worry about rushing the project because of a deadline…I find I have better results if I let ideas percolate for a while before digging in. Take your time, have some fun with it!
Hmm, I may have to give Anne of Green Gables a second chance. I dismissed her in my youth as a girlie girl and turned instead to Stephen King and Dean R Koontz.
Cheers for the thumbs up!
Yay, I actually didn’t know you also enjoyed a youth warped by the two Ks, stormfilled. 😉
Firstly, I think I missed out on this contest. I saw some people discussing it in comments but I had no idea what they were talking about.
Second, I want that Essential Dracula. Sounds like the groove to me!
Thirdly, my sister was always really obsessed with the Anne books, to the point that she keeps them on her bookshelves to this day and occasionally takes them down and flicks nostalgically through them, but I never could get into them. They were king od cheesy. My sister assured me that the later ones were much better though. So with that and your glowing recommendation I may read them when I have leisure.
GG
I don’t think they’re cheesy…they’re old fashioned and were written for a younger age than say Jane Austen’s books, but it is Anne as a strong female lead character who loves to read and imagine and pretend as a child who then takes that wonder into adulthood that I love. Her later teacher/student relationship with Paul is wonderful as is the whimsical cast of characters scattered throughout the books. They are very nostalgic books, no doubt about it, but I sure don’t see them as dumbed down reading for kids. The last few, which deal with her kids going off to war are especially moving. I love Rainbow Valley and the foreshadowings in that book that lead to other things further down the line.
I know some of you are international readers but for those of you in the states. I found the copy of Essential Dracula at Half Price Books. These are a chain of used of book stores found in numerous US cities. They also had Essential Frankenstein which also looked cool, too. They had multiple copies of both. I’m guessing they might have made a large closeout by on the books because I believe the book publisher, ibooks, went out of business earlier this year. It was only $ 6.98. psst don’t Carl that though.
Oooh, cool! I love pics of books. I just posted some of mine, last week. You can peek if you want to. Mind if I add you to my bloggy links?
No, that would be great Nancy!
Having some difficulty prioitizing. I’m decorating a new place and I’ve spent more money on books in the past month than I have on the house. Now I NEED the Dracula, the Frankenstein and Anne of Green Gables. I remeber reading the early ones, but I had no idea that went that far into her life.
Yep, there are 8 of them Pat, here is a link to show all the titles.
I can pick up the Dracula book at Half Price books here in town for you if you want me to Pat. Or I can have Jeff do it actually. 😉
That would be no problem Pat. Just let Carl or I know and I can pick up either or both of the essential books for you and pass them onto Carl to deliver to you.
I’m also being good Carl and not looking at today’s post. 🙂 I can’t wait until later today though. The packaging looks cool!
Bravo Jeff. I actually want you to pick up 2 Dracula books and 2 Frankenstein books…provided they are in decent shape and I’ll pay you back. Call me.
