Browncoats rejoice, Firefly goodness continues in the form of a fan focused documentary entitled Done the Impossible, the story of the rise and fall and rebirth of the cult TV show ‘Firefly’, as told from the perspective of the fans who helped save it. In an unprecented move they have released the main feature of this for free download in hopes that fans will then buy the DVD for the additional extras included on the DVD version. All proceeds of the DVD purchase go to Whedon’s favorite charity Equality Now. James has graciously loaded this video on to the server as a Quicktime video which can be downloaded here. It will open in a separate window and take awhile to download so please be patient.

Locus Magazine has announced the nominees for this year’s World Fantasy Awards (list here) I was excited to see that every artist on the nominee list is someone whose work I truly admire and I am glad that I don’t have the unenviable position of having to choose just one. The list is as follows (artist names in bold link to Friday Favorites posts):
and
I love the above spaceship image, one of my favorite works of science fiction art. Conjures up all kinds of thoughts and feelings.
I love all these artists and will be happy with whoever wins at the World Fantasy Convention in November.

And last but not least to fill your day with distractions is this fairly new website entitled Delocator.net. The purpose of the site is to create an online resource for café goers, bookstore shoppers, and movie buffs who wish to invest in locally owned businesses vs. corporate owned businesses. You can type in your zip code and select distance parameters to find local businesses to patronize. It is a very new program that needs your input. You can add favorite places in your area that you want others to know about. The site also appears to list chain bookstores, etc. in the area but the point is obviously to generate business for places that you love and don’t want to see disappear.
I for one enjoy the convience and often the cost savings of Borders and Barnes and Noble. I also like the comfy seats at the big movie houses. However, Mary and I also try to frequent the smaller independent movie houses to see independent and foreign films and I love to go to local bookstores and restaurants to find undiscovered treasures and try new things. I am going to send in some things about my area and I encourage you to do the same!
Happy Tuesday everyone!

Delocator is a great idea, thanks for sharing it!
It really is cool. I added several local places to the list today. You are able to give brief descriptions of the places that you enter which is fun. I hope the idea catches on as it would be a fun way to easily find unique local places to visit when on vacation, etc.
Ok Carl if you had to pick one who would it be? From the list above it would be Craft. The level of detail to me is amazing. I also truely like them all and can’t wait for art books from all of them.
I also am eargerly awaiting my copy of DonetheImpossible. I checked my charge card and my charge went through so I’m hoping they will be dropping it into the mail to me soon. 🙂
Hopefully its already in the mail.
As far as picking it is hard to say. For me I can’t just base it on which one is ‘better’ than the other only because each of their styles is so very different. From a classical point of view Craft kicks everyone’s butt and I’d have to say that her art is completely amazing. But does that necessarily mean it excites me in the same way that my first McKean work did? Not necessarily. I truly enjoy them all and they are all artists whose work makes me stop and pick up any book they’ve done a cover for to see what the book is about.
I have to admit it would be kind of cool if McKillip won for Od Magic and Craft won for her cover work on the same book!
That Delocator looks like a great idea. Pity there is none for Ireland.. maybe I’ll post a link over at TCAL and see if anyone wants to start it up.
Can’t believe you had nothing to say regarding the Firefly documentary Fence!
Well i coulda raved about Firefly, but I’ve done that more than enough 🙂 Besides, I haven’t seen the doc, I may download it over the weekend. So I just may be back.
As much as I want to watch it online I am probably just going to wait until Jeff gets his DVD, which should be in the mail, and then steal it from him. There are supposed to be a bunch of extras on it as well. Look forward to it, just hope it is not as disappointing as the Ringers, Lord of the Fans documentary.
What a fantastic idea that Delocator thingy is…! I’m going to investigate to see if they have that same kind of thing in France.
It really has some cool potential Anne. I emailed them yesterday and suggested that they broaden it beyond cafes, movie theatres, and bookstores to include specialty stores and art galleries. There are some really cool locally owned stores here: curious sofa and hammerpress being two that I have links to along the right. I think the same people who are interested in the things Delocator includes would be interested in finding these as well.
This post has annoyed me for two reasons, both concerning my place of residence.
1. Firefly is not shown in the UK, and I absolutely love Serenity, but the only way one can get hold of it here is to buy the box set for about £90, which is impossible when you’re in High School and earn less than a tenner a week. You can’t even rent it. I’ve looked.
2. Delocator does not cover the UK, which is a massive shame as it is a terribly good idea.
However, the art cheered me back up again, so all is good.
Sorry to annoy, BUT:
Good Girl, you can get the entire boxed set of Serenity on Amazon.co.uk for only 18.97 pounds and the Serenity DVD there for less than seven. I’d try that as Firefly is incredible.
I immediately thought Craft, without a doubt! Then I scrolled down and was glad I didn’t have to make the decision. What talen! The Delocator is a great idea; I’m already making a list.
And…I think I’ll wait to download since I wouldn’t get to bed until the wee hours if I did it now. How exciting. I needed a Serenity fix.
I’m sure it will take forever to download Pat and will open to a blank page (may say ‘downloading’ in lower left hand corner of your window).
