Happy Birthday, Mom!!!

As I mentioned yesterday, today was reserved for a very special post, one in which to wish my mother a very Happy Birthday!!!

The above picture is not as old as you might think. My mother is still that pretty and my brother and I are still close to that maturity level, so it fits perfectly really! (Sorry Abby, its hard to see you, being an egg several years from hatching and all…)

My mother is a very amazing woman. For those of you who’ve been reading for awhile you know that my mother will occasionally pop up in the comments section from time to time. Its always a hoot because I’m still a little amazed that my parents have a new computer in their home and are online. I’ve always thought of my parents as fairly hip but did not believe the day would come when they would join the world in cyberspace. I’m very proud of them both but especially my mom as she seems to have mastered email and internet traveling very well. That isn’t the only reason she is amazing.

Despite an attempt to leave my infant self at the airport on the way back from Germany (dad in army) she has always been a wonderful mom. She worked really hard in our home to provide my brother and I, and later our sister, a clean, safe, fun home environment and thanks to her we never went hungry, never felt alone, and always knew we were loved. We were and are very blessed. How she managed to put up with our silliness, stupidness, and rebelliousness I’ll never know (For an example of silliness I refer you back to the nipplegate incident). Regardless of anything we ever did, good or bad, mom always had time for us to talk things through. There was a time between my 10th and 11th grade years where I was really having some monumental struggles with things at school (mostly authority figures and my rebellious nature) and I recall having a moment of epiphany when I realized that I could talk to my mom about this stuff and she would actually listen…and even had some good advice. I doubt that I followed it all but at least she gave it to me anyway.

Mom, you share your birthday with such famous people as:

June Allyson, star of stage and screen from the late 1930’s. She starred in such films as Little Women in 1949, The Glenn Miller Story with Jimmy Stewart in 1954, and My Man Godfrey with William Powell in 1957 just to name a few. She turns 87 today.

Bishop Desmond Tutu who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984, he turns 73

and current Russian President Vladimir Putin, 52.

And of course today marks the 156th anniversary of the death of Edgar Allan Poe.

In addition you share your birthday with a young man who turns 6 years old today, Zachary Smith, son of our friends Jeff and Keri. Happy Birthday Zack, here’s some dinosaurs just for you:

and here is a link to a cool palaeontology blog that your dad can go to every day to show you pictures of dinosaurs bones and other cool stuff.

  1. Clearly, this is a day reserved for some pretty damn special women……..

Wish your mom the happiest of birthdays, though I’m sure after reading your post, her day is already well on its way to being fantastic!

  2. Yes it is, Machine! Happy Birthday to your wife! It is also an ex-girlfriend of mine’s birthday from high school and for some reason my wife frowned upon the idea of me doing a post solely about her… 😉

  3. I don’t know Machine, I could’ve posted prom pictures, date memories…It would’ve been a heck of a post! 🙂

  4. Happy Birthday Carl’s Mom; you know how they say the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree? Well, Carl must be right in his assessment of you; you seem to have raised a pretty darn nice human being 🙂

  5. Happy Birthday Mrs. A!!! You have my utmost respect. I am discovering that being a mom is super hard and bound to get harder. You raised three very good, well adjusted, nice people. Wow, I hope I can pull that off!!!

May your day be a wonderful one and may your happiest times be yet to come!!

  6. Happy Birthday Mom! I love you very very much! I wish I could be there to help you celebrate.

Your strength, wisdom, and compasion has always amazed me. Thanks for all the advice over the years & for always being there for me. I know that this may sound weird, but you are a calming source for me. So many times I have gone through a situation where instead of rationally thinking it through, I freaked out and became upset. But, then I would come to you and you would talk me through the problem. You always seem to know what to do and it is such a comfort to know that I can talk to you no matter what.

You are the best mom and I miss you very very much. I can’t wait to see you next & I hope your birthday is wonderful.

  7. Happy Birthday Mrs. Anderson!

Thanks for the dinosaur picture for Zachary. I’m sure he will love it when he comes home from school. Also thanks for the link he can remind me to take him to EVERY day. 🙂

  8. Jules…you only want to raise THREE good, well-adjusted, nice people? Which one are you picking to me maladjusted, mean and ornery??? 🙂

You’re welcome Jeff, I will make sure to call him occasionally to remind him to remind you to take him to the dinosaur site!!!

  9. I forgot to wish Zachary a very happy birthday!!! My Jessica is 6, it’s a fun age. My niece is CRAZY about dinosaurs. I will have to show her that site. She’s 6, too!!!

Jeff and Kerri, thanks so much for handing the bike down to our family. It’s already getting much use!

  10. Carl, thank you so much for the wonderful tribute on my birthday. It made my day!! You were a pretty easy son to raise. I am very blessed to have a wonderful husband, three great kids who married just the right spouses and three goodlooking ,talented ,sweet grandchildren. Thanks to all of Carl’s friends for their good wishes. Thanks to my lovely daughter for her post,I love you! Julie, your web site is an inspiration to me- I think you are doing a fine job raising your children. Once again, thanks Carl,I’m always amazed at your talents. Are you sure you shouldn’t be a writer? I love you more than you can know.

Also Happy birthday to Zachary. I’m glad to share this special day with you!!

  11. happy birthday vicki! i hope it’s a good one…you should get carl to bring you to nyc for one of them, don’t you think? would be nice to see you and jim again sometime soon, until then i send lots of love and thanks—scott

  12. I’m sure they will Heather.

You’re welcome, Mom. And no, the writer’s life is not for me as I’ve decided I’m going to just print money from now on and live like a king until the big hairy men come and drag me off to prison.

  13. Happy Birthday, Mom! You did raise 3 great kids, and your three adopted (read in-law) kids are very thankful. You are a wonderful mom, mother-in-law, and grandmother. We all love you bunches. Hope your birthday is great.

Carl said Vicki is still beautiful, and it is true! She is a very young, energetic, pretty grandmother. Tori especially loves the wonderful traditions you have set for our family.

Happy birthday, Zach, I hope you day is great! How did that cake turn out, Jeff?

  14. Julie, Keri and I are glad the your kids are enjoying the bike. Ashley was very happy they were getting it when we told her because she had so much fun playing with them on the 4th of July.

Mary, The cake came out great. I ended up only having to assist Keri with the cake making. I bought the ingredients, she mixed them all together then I poured the batter into the cake pans and loaded them in and out of the oven. She and Zachary then frosted and decorated the cake. Keri really makes wonderful cakes which is ironic since she doesn’t like to eat cake.

  15. So in other words Jeff, you really did nothing and your wife with the broken wrist did all the work…except for when you made your son decorate his own cake. Man, that’s cold. 😉

  16. Man, I was hoping it wasn’t that obvious. 🙂 I did do the dish’s afterwords does that count for something…anything…ya, your’re right…sigh!

  17. Whoa now, you may have redeemed yourself with doing the dishes…unless you just stacked them in the dishwasher. If that’s the case I think you’re still in the doghouse.

  18. Hey now, I pushed the button to start the load too after I stacked them in there and just between you and me I put them away too

  19. So…..my mother goes out to eat tonight for her birthday and when she walks into the restaurant she sees my high school girlfriend who I referred to in an earlier comment and, since my comment reminded mom that it was G’s birthday, she wished her a ‘happy birthday’. Mom said she looked kind of shocked and wished her a happy birthday as well. Mom would’nt have remembered had I not mentioned it today…ironic isn’t it?

  20. Carl,

U are my expert on animation. Have u seen the wallace and gromet movie yet? I was wondering if it is as good as all the hype?

  21. Saw it this afternoon…great stuff. I’ll post a review on it sometime tomorrow.
